This section should cover most aspects of pitching and camping in a tent at Kielder campsite.

Tent pitch size

There are no formal tent pitches, we offer a longitudinal field that has a track running through it. You select an area that suits you or that conditions allow.

Supply of tents

We do not supply or erect tents, this is the campers responsibility.

Fires [Fire bowls only]

We are in a forest that is often within a 'fire risk' period, even if it has been damp or cool. We allow responsible use of a fire bowl, off the ground enough to not damage the grass. It is unfair on the next visitors to leave scorched grass after leaving. We do not supply them and currently cannot obtain wood in bags at a fair price. You will need to bring or arrange this yourself. Fire bowl ashes must not be disposed of in the surrounds of the site. Use the metal bins available near the refuse area or empty the ashes into the river.

Ensure that you keep the noise down after our quiet period, fireside chats tend to get louder with time forgotten about.

Booking your tent

We charge per pitch, not per person. If you have chosen to bring a six man tent with only two occupants, then please book and pay for a six man tent. Costings are negligibly more.

There is to be no driving or parking on the grass, at all. Not even to offload, irrespective of weather. You use the track running through the centre of the pitching field to temporarily park whilst unpacking.

The track is wide enough for two cars to pass, ensuring that the grass is not damaged.

If you have booked with friends or family and wish to pitch together, the first visitor to arrive can ask for a reservation sign and 'bagsie' a pitch near them.

As a rule we are unable to offer tent pitches around hardstandings. It is a game of two half's....tents one end, hardstandings the other.

Group Bookings

We have a group booking policy. Please ensure you are aware of this prior to booking. No Stag, Hen or groups carrying out noisy activities. This is a quiet family site with a quiet policy at 10.00pm.

Gazebo

If you wish to add a Gazebo to your booking, please add this at time of booking. Gazebo's added to the pitch afterwards without consultation will be charged the current gazebo pitch rate per night.

Electric Hook up Pitches

We only have two electrical pitches, these are situated next to our static caravans. Through time and use, the ground around them has sunk. Ensure you arrive with your own camping electric cable, longer the better. [Absolute minimum for comfortable pitching is 10 metres.]

This facility is not a domestic three pin plug. You will require a lead that conforms to safety regulations, one type pictured here:  Electrical Hook up cable commando fit

Electric hook up cables

We do not sell or lend such cables. This is the camper's responsibility.

Parking

Once pitched vehicles are to be moved to the car park situated through the campsite towards the pub. The small car park near the ablutions is often mistakenly used. This is for short term arrivals, emergency vehicles and an area to turn around in for large or towing vehicles. Please do not use or obstruct.

Note: When parking you will be able to see the path that connects you to the reservoir, bike/walking trails, Kielder Castle and the Anglers Arms pub.

Planning

With our remote location, lack of local amenities or provisions; it would be wise for tent visitors to plan ahead. Smokers please take note. Our village shop whilst invaluable, can only stock a small selection of items. An e-mail sent ahead to order items, in a timely manner, could be advantagous to those staying for more than a few days. They will gladly hold milk, bacon, sausage etc if informed ahead of time.

Arrival times

This is from 2.00pm allowing departing guests time to leave and for staff to carry out essential day to day tasks. Early arrival will disrupt this process and is not advised without timely discussion. Late arrivals up until 7.00pm.

Please check before booking how long it takes to get here. It takes longer to travel than you may think. Arriving late, dependent on the site and weather conditions, may require pitching at our “late arrivals area”, then re-positioning the next day.

Refuse

We are unable to accept damaged or ruined tents in our refuse. Please take it home. Our bins are under 24 hour cctv surveillance. Any persons depositing such items will be charged accordingly. This includes any rubbish left on a pitch or incorrectly disposed of around the site. You will find our bins central to the site, opposite Badger pod. Everyone passes them on the way in.

We now offer recycling! Please read the signage and use the correct bins. Dog owners please take note: whilst it's an admirable idea doggy doo in poo bags does not recycle. A little more attention please when depositing. And our tent occupants, food waste mixed with recycling again, does not recycle.
